"What exactly ARE the hybrids that aren't of bug origin"
hybrids; you will hear me saying this for a lot of creatures. it, in short, is a generic term for any creature that is not exclusively one race.
that being said i should go into the main races of Ls'lkny. many of these can mix and mix fairly smoothly. i am currently unsure if all creatures have some amount of control over the 'genetics' passed on to offspring, but the "troll" types and elves have a fairly high control over it. although it seems slightly like creating a tabletop rpg character and you have a pool of characteristics, and that number from each side must be included (even if it takes a huge hit to your CHA stat; dont let those ones become bards). the spawn will end up with both parent's characteristics.
pregnancy and most other life consequences require "energy" rather than simply food. this is to varying degrees. there are a few creatures that use environmental, solidified, or life energy more than food energy. nearly all offspring require food until adult size regardless of adult energy or food needs. pregnancy energy generally can be manipulated through pregnancy by the mother, some of this is similar to human mothers automatically providing the fetus with proper nutrition, at nearly any cost. this energy and or food need spike has created a social cocooning of mothers-to-be (regardless of gender. some 'males' of some types can become pregnant if needed in dire circumstances; and there is a prevalence of a third gender in nobility and some tusked creature populations. other races such as some of the smaller creatures are exclusively both male and female).
races:
i will copy this from my comment on another site for the time being.
semi complete list (that i can think of offhand/know how to describe)
- an elf type creature, very magical usually healing or heat, black hair when young some their hair goes silver or white as they get older. hair is generally longer than shoulder length, very pale skin, gold eyes, tall, slim unless they are a halfbreed or hybrid.
- dragons, also quite magical with energy more destructive, hybrids and half-breeds can end up with backslung legs (similar to a hairless dog's), body hair being scales, leathery wings with a fur trim on the front edge to the wrist joint, in rare cases when mixed with some demons a long fairly thin tail, unless there is naga in the mix. half-breeds can shape-shift to look like a slightly smaller than their full dragon parent. hair and eye colors and style depends on genetics, the trend is influenced darker in most cases if with anything other than the elves.
- naga-creatures full nagas here tend to be more vibrant colors than irl snakes, very few have very complicated patterns, hybrids and half-breeds almost always keep the naga coloring of their parenting eyes usually matching the color of the main scales.
- Assorted 'demons'- (because there are several types, but demon type 1, 2... sounds worse) pick and choose from the following because most are interchangeable anyway: protective body hair that is lost as the demon gets older (usually on the heavier demons that are thin while young), unstoppable appetite (food or sexual), tails of many shapes and sizes, almost troll attributes, anywhere from three to six fingers and toes, lower canines or upper canines sticking out of the mouth, from very pale to nearly literally black skin. the gluttonous appetite is generally what classifies any hybrid as a demon.
-tusked creatures- simply that. they have protruding teeth; they tend to have 4 or 3 fingers on each hand. they also tend to be darker skinned than most other creatures overall. any creature with pronounced tusks that is light skinned is probably a hybrid of some kind. many of these creatures have some sort of horns as well.
-insectoid creatures - generally always hybrid; as they were the main cause of the last war of Ls'lkny there are still many who would never allow them in the city if they were not hybrid. many of the hybrids are still on the fringes of society and at best are merchants. they have some sorts of bio-luminescence, antennae, and wings that are not always functional. they also tend to have tougher skin or a partial exoskeleton. body shape tends to be wasp-like or beetle shaped, a few have horns.
there is a small thin 4 eyed creature that has fur, is bipedal and is about the size of a small human at largest without hybridizing with another creature type. these usually are glorified pets or companions although some are intelligent enough to live in society in a limited way. these are one of the exclusively hermaphroditic creatures.
climate around the city is a desert, a very hot desert. clothes are minimal if the creature is warmblooded. the sky is always cloud covered, and anywhere from a pinkish to a red, the sun is never seen but there is still day and night although barely. the city itself was a major mining hub that was mining a pure energy ore from the ground (energy that worked similar to how electricity does for us now, but it also is used for magic and much of life to exist). this energy mining made the city grow very fast and it also deprived other areas of the continent of the natural energy flow. these other areas that were being deprived naturally got quite upset and 2 wars broke out because of it. the final war being what made Ls'lkny collapse. the mines had become too deep under the city and were sabotaged, collapsing a good part of the city center and putting a halt to the mining. the city went quite quickly from a productive place to a more shady element taking over. taverns and brothels are quite common. there is also work for the very few shamen and other magic-workers to cure or curse and always traders, a handful of assassins and mercenaries for hire and of course common criminals. almost all of the population has pointed ears, either quite long or still able to be hidden under their hair, and claws are very common, some keep them semi-short though.
